,Why the mix exists
Manufacturers use aluminum for panels and structures where saving weight matters, high-strength steel where crash performance demands it, and composites where shape and strength can be molded together. A single car might have an aluminum hood and doors, a high-strength-steel safety cage, and composite elements elsewhere. Each material behaves differently when it's damaged and when it's repaired, so a repair plan has to account for what each part is actually made of, not treat the whole car as if it were one thing.
The reason aluminum needs its own space
Aluminum and steel don't mix well during repair, and the problem is contamination. When steel is ground or worked, it throws off fine particles. If those particles land on aluminum and embed in it, they can cause corrosion in the aluminum over time, a reaction between the two metals that eats at the panel from within. To prevent it, aluminum repair is done in an isolated area, with its own dedicated tools that never touch steel, and proper dust control. A shop that works with aluminum on the same bench, with the same tools, in the same air as its steel repairs is risking exactly the contamination the separation is meant to prevent. That's why serious shops build a separate, equipped space for aluminum work. The contamination risk is real, and the separation is what controls it.
Training and equipment, not just a bench
Beyond the clean space, aluminum and mixed-material repair takes specific training and specific equipment. The welding is different; the joining methods can involve rivets and structural adhesives rather than the welds you'd use on steel, and the manufacturer specifies exactly how each repair is to be done. Technicians need to be trained on those methods, and the shop needs the tools they call for. A general shop without that training and tooling can attempt the work, but attempting it isn't the same as doing it to the manufacturer's standard, and on a structural repair, the difference matters for how the car protects you.
How certification ties in
This is where certification becomes a useful signal.
